Little Learners Pre-School and Nursery wins coveted ‘Millie’s Mark’
Little Learners Pre-School and Nursery, situated in St Nicholas Avenue, Elm Park are the first nursery and pre-school within the Elm Park and Hornchurch area to win the coveted Millie’s Mark.
Millie’s Mark is England’s gold standard in paediatric first aid and is named after Millie Thompson who died in 2012 after choking on food at a nursery in Manchester when she was just nine month’s old. Little Learners’ Nursery Manager, Rebecca Clements, was inspired to train her staff to the Millie’s Mark standard after hearing the story, to provide reassurance to parents and empower all her staff to respond quickly in emergencies.
Little Learners Nursery and Pre-School offer home-cooked food to all their children. As a result of Millie’s Mark training, staff have started to share mealtimes with the children, all sitting down to eat together like they might at home. Confidence is a key factor in the administration of first aid and Millie’s Mark allows nurseries to feel confident in their team.
Becca Clements said “We realised that having staff and children sit together to eat provided numerous opportunities to develop children’s confidence, social abilities and skills like good table manners in addition to the staff being immediately available to assist any child who might get into difficulties. Our staff are now all paediatrically first-aid trained and as a result feel much more competent and confident in dealing not just with a child who might choke, with all the day-to-day first aid issues, including allergies and the normal bumps and tumbles of toddler life”
